One of the defining features of the Kalbeliya community is widespread landlessness. Historically accustomed to a mobile way of life, the community rarely possessed agricultural land or permanent residential property. Even after gradual settlement in different parts of Rajasthan and neighbouring states, many families continue to occupy government land, forest fringes, roadside settlements, or village commons without secure tenure. Such settlements frequently lack basic infrastructure, including safe drinking water, sanitation facilities, electricity, drainage systems, and all-weather roads.
